Whether you are cooking for a restaurant or your family, a perfect knife will significantly increase your happiness in the kitchen. Before I was taught anything about knives, I would use any old knife in the kitchen. Not realizing that ‘any old knife in the kitchen’ was actually a clam shucker. Hey, as a kid, the handle fit great in my hand, but, I guess that explains why I remember my parents having only ‘dull knives’. Well, I’m past my clam shucker days and I graduated to big girl knives. Take a look at what I deem to be the best knives for anyone and everyone!

Shun Premier Santoku 5.5”

Shun is well-known for its stunning artistry and detail in their metal work, thus it would be an insult to not have a Shun on this list. I received this knife as a gift a few years ago, but I have not seen it change a bit. This knife features a rounded, almost bulbed, wooden handle with a hammered textured finish on top of Shuns’ layered steel. The santoku shape is always a winner for me because it is very versatile. The one thing to keep in mind is to make sure the handle stays dry to maintain the wooden finish. This can be oiled minimally, as it appears to dry out over time. Handle with care, as layered steel is prone to chipping.

Wusthof Classic Chef’s 8”

Wusthof is a go-to brand when buying knives because they have sturdy metal, great customer service, and a wide range of specialized tools for culinary experts. Their Classic Chef’s knife is generally a great starter knife. This knife holds an edge well and can sharpen easily. This is fluid for the rest of the Classic line, as well. However, if you are just starting out in the kitchen, this knife will do everything you need it to. Often, this knife comes in a starter set by Wusthof.

Victorinox Paring 3”

Victorinox makes knives that are on a similar tier to Wusthof, but maybe slightly lower grade. This knife is wonderful and beats all of the other paring knives. Talk about versatility, this knife makes a great sous chef, bar hand, or letter opener. Victorinox made this knife so cheap and so good. This knife runs less than $15 and has a plastic handle. It may not look pretty, but it gets the job done. The metal is just as good as the Classic Victorinox line, but lacks aesthetics. In this case, function is the way to go.
